I hope the little old man cross my way again, so I can talk to him.
I like our project not only because getting a new focus on Berlin, it gives me also always a good reason to ask and talk to everybody I get interested in.
Berlin, Alexanderplatz, the old centre of East Berlin Capital of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR). It is a nice sunny autumn day. A man in his late sixties passed the huge buildings. (To be a huge building does not mean that much in Berlin) In his clothes he looked like a former civil servant, spending his life between folders. He walked and pushed on a bike. He looked funny because he was very short, just one or two heads higher then the saddle of his bike. Not only the man even his bike looked well kept. It was a simple one, produced in a Combine. In GDR times to buy one was not easy, there was always a shortage in supply. On his bike the old man transported a bundle of old used copper pipes.
The whole picture the man gave me was like coming direct out of other time. In the sixties, when the east German government build the wall one argument was, they have to do that, because they have to stop the leaking of valuable copper from the from the east sector to the west sectors. In the GDR they had always a shortage on copper the citizen got asked to bring old one to collecting stations.
Sometimes you see people collecting used metal or old technical equipment. But they are look different from these little man you can see that they are poor, wearing old dirty clothes and do not looking well kept at all.
The impression he gave me, coming out of other time made me sentimental.
I was on my daily way to the rehearsal space, people expecting me be in time, so I could not stop and ask the man. Where he lives, where he got the pipes and where he goes to bring it. What he will get it for? I have no idea where you can sell old copper in the centre of Berlin nowadays.
I hope he will cross my way again, so I can ask.
