I have many German friends that have chosen to make Richmond their home. They love the heat, which they compare to the tropics. I love living here, but the heat is my nemisis. October brings relief, heavy rains sent here from the hurricanes of the real tropics ; and autumn color when the trees shed their leaves. It is a time for reflection, and inquiry; a time to consider the evidence of our industry and the consequences.

I am a visual artist and teacher, married to a writer and actor. We experience Richmond with a physical and conceptual approach - we deal with what it is, celebrate what we can and work towards what it can be. I love Richmond most after spending many weeks some place far away such as Bavaria or Paris or New Orleans. It is always nice to come home.
Three things that float to the surface when I consider Richmond are humidity, irony and creativity. I think a lot of creative types settle here because it is far enough from the center of things (NYC) to be affordable and close enough (via Amtrak) to provide easy access to the ideas of the world. (With Mutation, we no longer need Amtrak!)
Studio and rehearsal space is abundant if one can endure the sweltering summers in unairconditioned lofts or other industrial spaces in the city. October is generally one of the best monthes to live and work in Richmond. Brilliant days like the one we all noted last Sept 11 are in abundance and the academic and cultural calendar is in a relatively calm place compared to the holiday hysteria that will begin in mid-November.
Virginia is still reeling from the events of last fall. The Pentagon is located in the northern part of the state so
September 11 had a direct impact on our economy and peace of mind. It has been sober season, even in all its beauty.
