The editors of one of our local tabloids (the one with a Letterman-like attitude) published an interview with Dan Savage; who writes the column Savage Love. His column is published all over the US and overseas - and is a delight to read in contrast the depressing headlines that slap us in the face each morning.
Dan is rational and outrageous and a breath of fresh air. I might get tired of reading about other people's sexual perversity every morning - but once a week is perfect!
"Punchline," the publisher of the SAVAGE LOVE column, is RIchmond's answer to commercial enterprise. It is rude, silly and practical. Occassionally there is something fabulous to read (other than the calendar of what films are showing where in town,) that is REAL - such as this interview or a great review. Their review of "Rapture," part of a retrospective on Video Art at the Virginia Museum, was phenomenal. I had seen that video of the rituals of men and women in Iraq at the Whitney Biennial in NYC - and it was worth seeing again. What was most surprising was that Puncline could enlighten as well as amuse and give me reason to go a third time.
I don't know if Dan Savage will enlighten anyone, but he is really good at pissing people off - particulary those that put their pants on with the political right. Whatever you think - please email him. He always publishes his email address at the end of his regular column.
